If Hilary runs for office I will first cry and then brace myself for a national dialogue on the evils of pant suits. Male politicians don’t have to deal with this kind of fashion scrutiny. Still. I love a challenge. I also happen to love clothes, fashion and the opportunity to express myself in whatever I can get away with – from Forever 21 to Chico’s (Haha, just kidding…sorry Mom, I can’t imagine shopping at Chico’s. But then again I never thought I’d wear insoles.)
Being unemployed for much of this year my primary daily clothing debate has centered around what kind of underwear to wear beneath my yoga pants (Granny or thong? Rebel or conformist?). But now that I have a job and must look presentable five days a week, I’ve been thinking about work clothes. Thus far I’ve been killing it with my H&M blazers and jeans. Still there’s only so much business casual I can stomach before I want to binge on a romper or something better suited for a 10-year-old but typically worn by women 14-30. And that’s when the choice arises. Do I express my sexuality and femininity or risk being taken less seriously in the office?
In its most extreme form fashion for women consists of a choice between slut or androgynous woman. Either I drape myself in an Anthropologie-like tent for the equivalent price of two therapy sessions or I indulge a slightly skanky style, like Bebe’s Business slutty line (also two therapy sessions). Most clothes marketed to young women scream “Fuck me now,” (whether the girl know it or not…usually, she doesn’t). But at least Bebe presumes that women work and have to be taken seriously. Bebe’s tight fitting suits always make me think of a really hot bank teller. She does her job well, but doesn’t want to have to bother with changing into something sexy when she goes home to her gym rat boyfriend. So in that sense Business Slutty is a big time saver for women. Go Bebe!
On the other side of the continuum lies the androgynous “I have kids and I work and do productive things in my free time.” Brands specifically targeted to professional smart women like Theory (a line of clothes, not the noun for an intellectual idea) really say, “I expect to be taken seriously” but sometimes the black/white/beige color palette makes me sad and reminds me of a woman alone in a kitchen drinking a glass of wine.
