“A Journey Of Self-Discovery” Comedy Album Recording!

Roland Boloc made all these cool fliers!

On Thursday night I recorded my first comedy album, “A Journey of Self-Discovery” at TimeWarp records in Mar Vista. The show was produced by Roland Boloc, the album produced by Kyle Clark’s new comedy record label, “Radland Records,” and the comedy created by me.  Wow. Can I take a nap now?

I admit, I did not sleep much the weeks leading up to it. I had no idea how hard it would be to get ready for a 30 minute set (not even an hour!).  I’m sparse, minimalist, when it comes to comedy and home decor.

Look at all the people who came!

I have also never performed comedy for 30 minutes. Stage time in LA is not easy to come by, let alone anything over ten minutes. I squeezed into shows in front of not-so-captive audiences of comics, waited around mics like I have done for years, performed in front of the mirror (I killed!), FaceTimed my set to my neighbor in New York and performed my set for my friend Kazu and her husband Allen, who insisted that I run my set despite the fact that they have both heard my jokes dozens of times. TRUE FRIENDS!

Jen O’Donnell is my awesome podcast partner and all around brilliant person.

I was overwhelmed by the love and support I received from friends, comics, and people I hardly know (fans?).  No matter how hard comedy may seem, it’s well, even harder. It’s a slow, methodical grind that teaches the power of a single pause, “uh” or adverb put in the wrong place.  It’s also intense focus.

Years ago I went to Melbourne, Australia with Maria Bamford for the Melbourne Comedy Festival.  Maria stressed about her shows and I shopped for shoes. (I did find some cute ones).  “You’ll do great!” I said to her. “You’re Maria Bamford.” I feel bad now. I had no idea that her stressing was so grounded in reality. Yes, she is brilliant to me. But it’s only because she makes it look easy.

Anyway, I did it! I can sleep now and have time to date and obsess about aging! Horay!
