A Long Hot Summer

My summer was not “hot” like Paul Newman.

It has been a long hot summer. And not in a sexy Tennessee Williams kind of way. More like a furnace blast that hasn’t been cleaned in a decade.  It’s the kind of hot that makes you crazy and lethargic and confused. (Although Mercury is now officially in forward-grade…thank you sweet Jesus).  The kind of hot that makes me question on a daily basis my decision to pursue acting/comedy/writing.  But mostly it has really made me miss my mom.

I miss talking to her, but I also miss the idea of parents. Those figures in your life against which you can measure your bad (in my case) decisions against. Now I pay the price for my bad decision without any of the righteous indignation that makes expensive shoes and Hagen Dasz at midnight so amazing.

Anyway, let’s just say that early August was not a good time for me.  However, in the second week, a couple of things happened that made me believe in divine providence and retrograde “woo woo.”  And the afterlife.

The first came from my friend and honest-to-God “patron” who has generously sent me money to support my blog. (Talk about pressure!) I have had this blog for many years and it has mostly yielded about $50 when I sold ad space that turned out to include links to Russian bride websites. Go capitalism! I am not on Patreon and have always written this blog with freedom as my number one goal. I appreciate all financial contributions, but anyone who reads or supports this blog gives me a gift far greater than money.

Then I came home to find a letter from a credit union. Apparently, my mom, the adamant saver, had a hidden account for which I was the beneficiary.  The amount won’t change my life, but the timing could not have been more symbolic. It was like she reached from beyond to remind me that she is still here to loan me money.

We still have a month to Fall. Stay sweet.
