Wishing You A Feel Lizard Naval Dad

My dress matches the stockings. Mom made them both.

At dinner tonight my father told the story of when he fainted in a restaurant and his friend shouted, “It’s the fish!” I’ve heard the story about a hundred times, not to mention that I was witness to the event. (I don’t recall said punchline but I fully support embellishment). He asked me to look up from my phone to hear the punchline and instead of doing that I said, “I’ve heard the story before.” Not the holiday spirit I would like to bring to family situations. So this holiday season, I encourage you TO THE SAME DANG STORY IT’S THE HOLIDAYS.

I don’t have a lot of holiday pictures of my family from Christmas, so you’ll have to believe me when I say that “magical” does not begin to describe Christmas in my family. Christmas began around 5 pm on Christmas Even when my aunts, uncle, cousins, grandma and whoever else crammed into somebody’s house or apartment.  We then began the tamale production process, ate, drank (the adults) and played charades. One year my uncle acted out “Feel Lizard Naval Dad” and it took my aunt, his wife’s powers of discernment, to figure out that the song was, “Feliz Navidad.” All this led to midnight mass, after which the kids went to bed, and the adults opened presents till 4:00 am, at which point we woke up and opened presents and stockings.

A lot of people post pictures and stories on Facebook about the holidays and how their mothers went above and beyond to make sure they were magical experiences. As an adult, and with my mother not here, I can appreciate the work my mom put into Christmas. A lot of women work with love and passion to make their holidays special family events.
